governance

My Red Lady:

I'm afraid you will not find the King to be too responsive these days, though you may manage to draw him out.

Though things have settled out somewhat in recent years, the way we run our affairs clearly leaves something to be desired. When one improves one's chance of survival by journeying to the Northern Wastes to fight barbarians rather than attending a royal banquet, something is out of whack with our system of government. Though, come to think of it, it was an unanticipated boon for finding volunteers among the lesser nobility for the officers' corps.

The Red Witch

My dear King,

It has been far too long… I know, with good reason. Too much has happened here, and there are more important things at hand I think than foolish banter.

But still, there is much to be said. We owe each other that much, at least. And because there is far too much blood between us not to.

Many have died. Or everyone who matters has. Many of them at my own hand (and yours as well). I think we owe it to them to do this.

Why else do I write? Because my legacy demands it. There is a story that must be told…
